Alpacas are great animals that you can keep in a farm not only because of the quality of fiber that their fur can provide you with but because they are such a lovable bunch. So if you plan to have a herd of alpacas in your farm, it is best if you would try to familiarize yourself first with how they behave and communicate for you to be able to take care of them better. To list, here the most important things that you need to know about Alpacas

One, you should know that Alpacas make use of sounds as well as various body movement to communicate.

If you see that an alpaca’s body is rigid, its ears leaning forward while its tail are slightly raised, know that it’s on alert and perhaps they sense some danger.

You’ll know that a fight between two alpacas is about to occur when they stand rigidly next to each other while their ears are pinned back and their heads are tilted upward. You’ll just know that one submits when it drops its neck and flip its tail on its back.

Do not panic when you see that an alpaca is laying flat in the sun. It’s not dead, chances are it’s just sunning because alpacas really love laying in the sun especially on warm days.

Alpacas also love to roll in the dust by putting their nose to the ground, pawing the dirt and dropping to their knees and roll over.

It is also important for you to know that Alpacas can also be aggressive. So if you see an alpaca put its head down near the ground while its tail is way up in the air, immediately get out of the area because he might run after you.

Fighting among male alpacas is quite common. But you need to know that they really don’t care about their safety during a battle with other male species so be sure to keep your pasture clear of any obstructions that may hurt them.

It is usually the elder, dominant female alpaca which alerts the herd of anything that she thinks is scary. Whenever she does that, other alpacas will look and seem to decide whether they really need to be alert. If not, they resume whatever it is that they’re doing.

When an alpaca is being sheared, it lets out a really piercing sound which would make you think that someone is trying to murder her.

Knowing how alpacas behave is necessary especially if you want to have an alpaca farm for business. So be sure to familiarize yourself with the list of common behaviors that alpaca does and have an easier and better time taking care of them.

If you want to earn money the exciting way, you may want to consider getting into investing on an Alpaca Farm. Alpacas, graceful South American camelids (which happens to look like the popular Llamas, only shaggier), offer a great window to earning wealth. These peaceful herd animals provide some of the most beautiful – and expensive – wool there is in the world. So if you do think you want to get ahead in this expansive farm business, here are a few things that you may to look up into:

It’s an Investment for a Wooly and Bright Future
The first thing when investing on an Alpaca Farm is to find out more on the animals themselves. To save you the trouble of actually visiting South America, you can always source out Alpacas from several breeders and farms nationwide. And make sure to invest on a female – you’d want your farm to grow, right? The great thing about directly purchasing Alpacas from these breeders is that yourselves you’ll also get to expose yourself on how Alpacas are properly treated. If lucky, you may even be offered free advice in Alpaca farm maintenance by the breeders themselves!

The next thing that you would need to invest in is farm equipment. Alpaca food, feeds and feeders are obviously needed – you wouldn’t want to let your investment to just feed out on the grass, especially during cold days! Basic farm equipment – such as ropes, hoes and other gardening and carpentry tools – will let you have a much easier time managing your prized investments.

Safety first!
Unlike normal farms, you would need to safely and properly protect your Alpacas. With these animals seen as money bags to some, you may need to guard your farm with a much bigger and open eye. Also, you never would know if predators would be out in the open. Keep your Alpacas safe by having a sturdy gate or fence built. The gate would not only be where the Alpacas stay and sleep in, but for the entire farm and grazing area as well. You may also want to consider having a herd dog in the farm. The dog can not only guard your beasts, but can be a good and alarming canine that’ll let you know if someone – or something – is after your investment.

Fleece Delight
Another thing to look out for in Alpaca Farming is the produce itself. When the time does come, carefully let you or a worker carefully shear the animals. The nice thing about Alpaca fleece is that it can be sold in its different forms. Raw fleece and yarn can be sold off to fashion suppliers and designers. If you’re feeling creative, you can make a living out of knitted Alpaca clothes. Even better, Alpaca fleece can also be woven into stuff toys – a treat for kids and kids-at-heart alike.

Investing on an Alpaca Farm can yield profitable results. Have these tips on mind, to assure you that you’re getting your money’s worth. And once you do have a farm, enjoy the company of the Alpacas!

Do you want to venture into a unique, yet profitable farming business? Or maybe you’d like to encounter and experience breeding a very different, yet graceful herd of animals? Then you’re on the right article. Read on to find out more on investing in alpaca farms.

Alpacas are domesticated camelids, with its major population found in South American countries (mainly Peru, Bolivia and Chile). There are, however, alpaca breeders found across the world. It distinctly resembles a llama, except it has a much more lustrous fleece. Alpaca fiber, which is somehow similar to wool, is prized for being warmer, silky, and hypoallergenic (due to not containing any trace of lanolin). Due to the alpaca fiber’s distinct qualities, the past Incan generation named it “The Fiber of the Gods”.

Since alpacas produce such prestigious fiber, market value of the animals and the products from their fleece are constantly high. A female alpaca would be prized at around $20,000! Still, an investment on these camelids can prove to be fruitful.

Now that you know the potentially high returns you can get from alpacas, here are a few tips on how to start your Fiber of the Gods investment:

Find your Alpaca – source out alpaca breeders from the net. Make sure to check for websites with reviews. This way, you’ll get the best value for your money. Also, compare prizes between multiple sites. You never know if a breeder is charging more than another.

Start small – once you find a breeder, choose your alpaca. Start with at least a male and female alpaca, slowly adding additional females once you’ve save up on enough money. Alpacas are fairly easy to manage, it just takes a lot of patience before they breed. Increasing the size of your herd may take time, but make sure your animals are well taken care of. Better yet, get a breeder that would suggest the best way on caring for your herd.

Shorn business – before getting your fiber, you have to make sure your alpacas are kept in a safe facility. Invest on proper facilities, such as a barn, for the herd to live in. If needed, hire someone experienced on alpaca care. Also, make sure alpacas have at least a pasture to graze in.

I herd that – give the care your herd deserves. Alpacas are noted to be very personable. Get to experience life with them – after all, investment is more than just giving out money. Time and attention is needed as well.

Alpaca farm management is not only profitable, but can also be considered a great way to relieve stress. Business profit aside, you get to earn a fairly cheerful experience with alpacas as well.

Since alpacas are very docile and independent, farmers who are used to raising other livestock such as sheep and horses find it easier to raise alpacas. Alpacas like to graze on open pastures and herd with other alpacas. They don’t need a lot of attention.

In fact, they don’t like people especially people they don’t know and other animals approaching them. Raising them just means giving them the right environment and checking their health from time to time. If you have them as pets, it will also make them happy if you hug them once in a while. The basic maintenance work that alpacas need are feeding, constant trimming of toe nails (so that you won’t get scratched when you shear them), occasional vaccination and worming and yearly shearing. Although they don’t drink much, they also need clean sources of water for their daily hydration. Aside from the basic maintenance, the only other basic thing that is needed to do is to monitor their health. Healthy alpacas are alert and have good posture. Their eyes are clear and they move around to graze. You need to check them out from time to time and have a veterinarian see them if you see something different in them like if they are not standing up or if their head is bent low.

Alpacas are low-maintenance animals. If you have a good property with lots of spaces of pasture grass, you can leave the alpacas the whole day and just visit them for their supplements or to to check their health. They have good hygiene (they poop in only one part of the property) so cleaning the farm will not use up a lot of your time.

A few years back, the most popular fabric used in our clothing is the synthetic wool. However, today with the growing number of green environmentalist customers, the clothing industry is turning to other sources of fabric and one of them is the alpaca.

Alpacas are animals that are raised very much like the sheep. They are prized because of the dense and shiny fleece. The clothing made from their fleece is said to be earth-friendly because the alpacas don’t have soft feet that don’t contribute to soil erosion like horses. They don’t need a lot of grain and water. Their fleece are renewable resources. Aside from being environmentally friendly, alpaca clothing is also better in quality than clothing that are made from sheep’s wool or other synthetic wool. They are more resilient and they don’t shrink after being washed. They are also wrinkle, wind, odor and rain resistant.

The most popular examples of alpaca clothing you can find in stores today are the following:

alpaca jackets

alpaca socks

alpaca hats

alpaca cardigans

alpaca scarves

alpaca shawls

You can find a number of people in New York and other fashion capital wearing alpaca more and more. They have proved that there is a growing market that can be tapped for environmentally friendly, durable and fashionable clothing. Alpaca clothing will be the top choice for clothing makers in the years to come.

The ancestors of the alpacas in the USA came from the ancient lands of Peru, Chile and Bolivia. They get their nutrition from the bounty of the South American soil. When they were imported to the USA, they still keep their old diet but other kinds of food are needed to be added because the USA soil don’t lack some minerals and nutrients that are abundant in South America.

Americans who breed alpacas give alpacas hays aside from the ready supply of pasture grass. One alpaca is given an average of 3 pounds of hay everyday. The most used hay type is the ones that are used for horses because it has a good amount of protein

In addition to the staple food of grass and hay, alpacas are also given food supplements because they can’t get all their nutrients from the hay. Certain minerals are lacking in the American soil and so alpacas are given supplements in the form of mineral blocks. These are the same mineral blocks that are given to goats.

Since alpacas are used to eating grass alone, they develop digestive problems when they are given food supplements. Because of this, they are also give probiotics. Probiotics are a kind of bacteria that help in the proper digestion of food.

Having a good diet is important for alpacas because it shows in their fiber and in their posture. Alpacas who eat food with some protein, carbohydrates and other minerals produce more beautiful fleece and have over-all good health and good looks. They will be very good for shows and competitions.
